In addition to the development and execution of section-specific quality improvement initiatives, the Section of Hospital Medicine partners with UChicago Medicine more broadly to promote system-wide improvement. Examples of clinical collaborations have included sickle cell disease, fall prevention, DVT prophylaxis, and insulin management. Operational areas of focus include length of stay, readmission, patient experience and community engagement. Hospitalists are looked to as leaders in these areas given their expertise in inpatient management and care coordination. Physicians from the Section of Hospital Medicine also have leadership roles as medical directors of multiple service lines and serve on many hospital-wide committees.
