David Meltzer, MD, PhD; Section Chief
Fanny L. Pritzker Professor of Medicine
Dr. Meltzer’s research explores problems in health economics and public policy with a focus on the theoretical foundations of medical cost-effectiveness analysis and the cost and quality of hospital care. In addition to his position as Section Chief Dr. Meltzer is the Fanny L. Pritzker Professor in the Department of Medicine, an Associated Faculty Member at the Harris School of Public Policy and Department of Economics, the Director of the Center for Health and the Social Sciences (CHeSS), the Director of UChicago Urban Health Lab, and Chair of the Committee on Clinical and Translational Science. Dr. Meltzer completed his MD and PhD in economics at The University of Chicago and his residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. You can learn more about his work here.
Anton Marius Chivu, MD; Director of Clinical Operations
Associate Professor of Medicine
In addition to Dr. Chivu’s position as Director of Clinical Operations, he is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Hospitalist. Dr. Chivu completed his MD at Transylvania University and his residency at McLaren Regional Medical Center.
Elizabeth Murphy, MD; Director of Clinical Service Development
Assistant Professor of Medicine
Dr. Murphy is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in addition to their role as Director of Clinical Service Development. Their research expertise is in quality and outcome improvement. Dr. Murphy completed their MD and residency at the University of Michigan.
Nicole Bendin, MD; Director of Transplant Services

Dr. Bendin completed their MD at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Residency at San Diego Medical Center.
Matthew Cerasale, MD MPH; Director of Quality Improvement
Assistant Professor of Medicine
Dr. Cerasale’s academic interests are focused on quality improvement. His experience has been focused on venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, inpatient resource utilization, electronic health record optimization, and quality improvement education. Dr. Cerasale received his MD from the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his Residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. During his time at Henry Ford, Dr. Cerasale received his Master of Public Health from Michigan State University. Dr. Cerasale is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine.

Dr. Martin’s expertise and research are focused on perioperative Care. The completed their MD at the University of Missouri School of Medicine and her residency and a fellowship at the University of Chicago.

Catherine Paez, MS ; Section Administrator
Catherine (Cathy) Paez joined the Section of Hospital Medicine in 2021 with a background in ambulatory and inpatient operations management from the Department of Pediatrics. She is passionate about supporting and engaging teams and leveraging data to inform decision-making. Cathy holds a master’s degree in Public Service Management with a specialization in Healthcare Administration from DePaul University as well as bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Sociology from Saint Louis University. She was also the recipient of the 2020 Diana Havill Ryan Service Award from the Department of Pediatrics.
